Welcome to the Nautilus
Step inside the castle and embark on a journey into the fascinating world beneath the water’s surface. From colourful fish and graceful seahorses to mysterious jellyfish, the Nautilus reveals the extraordinary diversity and beauty of aquatic life from around the globe.
As you explore, you will travel through a series of unique habitats, from the North Sea and the Mediterranean to tropical reefs, mangroves, freshwater environments, and the waters of California and the Caribbean. Each area showcases remarkable species and tells the story of the fragile ecosystems they call home.
Temperate seas zone
Discover the powerful waters of the North Sea and the English Channel, where marine life has adapted to strong currents and ever-changing conditions. With subtle colours and streamlined shapes, these species are perfectly equipped to thrive in this demanding environment.
Anemone zone
Explore the fascinating world of rocky shorelines, shaped by the constant rhythm of the tides. Among rock pools, crevices and submerged surfaces live sea anemones that are uniquely adapted to changing temperatures, varying salinity levels and even periods of exposure to the air. Their colourful tentacles capture food carried by the water, while their flexible bodies help them withstand the often-harsh coastal conditions.
Mediterranean zone
In the clear, sunlit waters of the Mediterranean, marine life flourishes in remarkable diversity. Among rocky outcrops, seagrass meadows and open waters, you will discover everything from swift predators to discreet species hidden on the seabed.
Tropical zone
Dive into one of the most colourful ecosystems on Earth. Tropical seas are home to an astonishing variety of species, vibrant colours and ingenious survival strategies. From exotic fish and sea turtles to spectacular coral reefs, every encounter highlights the beauty and fragility of these extraordinary habitats.
Gulf of California & Caribbean zone
Explore two of the richest marine environments on the planet. Nourished by nutrient-rich waters, these regions support an exceptional diversity of life. Some species travel in vast shoals, while others conceal themselves among rocks and sandy seabeds, waiting for the perfect moment to hunt.
Coral world zone
Coral reefs are among the most remarkable ecosystems on Earth. Built over time by tiny coral organisms, these underwater cities provide food, shelter and breeding grounds for thousands of species. At the same time, they are among the most fragile habitats on our planet.
Jellyfish zone
Mysterious, elegant and almost hypnotic, jellyfish drift with the ocean currents. Behind their graceful appearance lie highly efficient predators, using their tentacles to capture plankton and small prey in the vast depths of the seas.
Mangrove zone
Discover one of nature’s most important nurseries. The roots of mangrove trees create a safe haven for young fish and countless other species. Here they find food, protection and the opportunity to grow before venturing out to reefs and the open ocean.
Paludarium zone
Between land and water lies a unique living world. This miniature ecosystem recreates a natural balance where plants, fish and sometimes amphibians coexist. It offers a fascinating insight into the close relationship between aquatic and terrestrial environments.
Freshwater zone
Journey through the tropical rivers and wetlands of the Amazon, equatorial Africa and South-East Asia. In these often-dark waters, species have evolved striking colours, refined senses and remarkable adaptations to thrive among roots, dense vegetation and flowing currents.
And there’s more…
The experience extends beyond the exhibition areas. Even in the Nautilus facilities, fish swim before your eyes, reminding you that the wonders of the underwater world are never far away.
